I don’t know whether this is an appropriate song to sing while riding a bike but this was there in my mind when I was riding back home yesterday after a brief shopping. I was in a generally good mood with the winter around. Winter is around. My favorite season… The mornings have become chilling and the evenings foggy. It has become increasingly difficult for me to make out the speedily constructing large building in the far away horizon. I have passed the bill in my parliament to shop for winter clothes as I have to spend some time in Delhi this winter, hopefully for my work, if not distracted by roaming around the historical monuments or down with booze.
I remember being in Delhi, in the beginning of the last winter. I hardly got an occasion to use my expensive jacket which I bought only to show off a bit. I thought it made me look like Steve McQueen but nobody in the National Archives paid any attention to my jacket.
May be they didn’t know Steve McQueen. If I had mentioned this to the good-looking girl in the reception, she might have thought that I was talking about some British Civil Servant from the 17th Century! This time I am going to Delhi University and hopefully the jacket might come to use. Oh! I was talking about a song, right?
‘Long Haired country Boy’ by Charlie Daniels got into my mind somehow and I think the whole excitement of anticipating winter has got to do something with it. The song rushed into my mind whenever I entered a ‘winter pocket’.
Winter Pocket?
I’ll explain. The places, corners or certain spaces on the road where the temperature suddenly drops into a winter-like situation in the evenings and mornings… these spaces simply do not exist when it is mid-day. Now, that winter is around the corner, nature has opened up these spaces for people like me to get crazy visions and so on.
People say I’m no-good,
And crazy as a loon.
I get stoned in the morning,
I get drunk in the afternoon.
Kinda like my old blue tick hound,
I like to lay around in the shade,
An’, I ain’t got no money,
But I damn sure got it made.
I have never considered Charlie Daniels as a favorite of mine except for the fact that a couple of songs by him is there in my playlist including this one. But, considering my mood these days, I generally give it a slip whenever it comes up.
‘Cos I ain’t askin’ nobody for nothin’,
If I can’t get it on my own.
If you don’t like the way I’m livin’,
You just leave this long-haired country boy alone.
Now that this songs has suddenly become a chartbuster on my tongue, I guess I will add a couple of more songs by Daniels into my playlist and see if it is gonna do some miracle.
Waiting for Winter…

Have you seen the film “Bullitt” with Steve McQueen? Very good. One of the best car chase scenes in film. And Steve looks very, very cool.
I have! One of the first Steve McQueen films I watched. My favorite is The Thomas Crown Affair and The Towering Inferno.
